The future is not something to predict it is something to design. At FLOW, we explore how humanity can live well within the limits of one planet, while unlocking prosperity for all. Our “Futures” design-led research investigates scenarios that stretch beyond climate targets to reimagine whole systems of living. We ask: what if African cities, where 70% of tomorrow’s urban fabric is yet to be built, became the blueprint for planetary regeneration? The World’s Greatest Opportunity

By 2050, we'll see the biggest urbanization wave in history, with Africa’s population reaching 2.4 billion, and 70% living in cities. Two-thirds of that urban fabric does not yet exist. This isn’t just a challenge: it’s a chance to create millions of climate-smart urban jobs, test new technologies, and incubate an innovative bioeconomy for a planet under pressure.

At today’s consumption rates, humanity will need three planets by 2050 if we lived like the average American. Without a new model, Africa’s urbanization risks repeating the world’s mistakes on an unprecedented scale.
